would expect that nancy pelosi is going to be speaker again pretty soon. >> speaking at the house democratic policy retreat in virginia yesterday president obama looked into his crystal ball predicting the democrats will take back control of the house "pretty soon." the reality of democrats seizing the lower chamber is a bit more sober. house democrats need to pick up 17 seats to retake the majority, and according to politico, just four republican encome bents represent districts that lean democratic while 15 democrats will be defending their seats in areas that tilt republican. redistricting has not helped. the redrawn districts in 2010 left 109 republican seats more secure compared with just 67 democratic seats that were made safer. the 2012 election bore the fruit of those changes. the cook political report found that while house republicans won just 49% of the popular vote, they took 54% of house seats. the political reality, however, may matter more than the actual numbers. jeremy peters writes in "the "new york times"" house democrats are starting to appreciate a new politic
and keeping that focus, i would expect that nancy pelosi's going to be speaker again pretty soon. >> david, obviously, interesting comments of the president there and the first read team says despite and we all know this, the debate over immigration and what to do about gun violence in this country, it is still the economy and they write, david, just in part, there's been no bridging between conservative view of austerity by measures of cutting spending cuts and what the democrats see here. as the solution, especially with sequester. we know that the democrats certainly have their plan as we have been told. they want a 50-50 split of spending cuts and tax hikes. that's the plan democrats are leaning toward but this still really is about the economy and how to solve some of the immediate problems we have. >> yeah. i must tell you that i'm one of the progressives who agrees with the economist paul krugman on this. any time talking about deficits, we are buying in to the right wing mantra somehow deficits are killing the economy. look at great britain and doing with their austerity plans and
make cuts as well. >> house minority leader nancy pelosi talking about sequestration and the budget on "fox news sunday" with chris wallace. she says the democratic party has made enough spending cuts though it is open to more and what the economy really needs is growth and new revenue. earlier this morning i had the opportunity to is sit down with chris wallace and hear more about his exclusive interview with the congress woman. chris, your conversation with nancy pelosi earlier today was actually the other day that you pretaped it, she seemed to indicate that democrats are bound and determined to raise taxes again. >> absolutely. you know, it is the old line the president used it during the campaign, balanced approach. it can't all be spending cuts, it has to be spending cuts and also some tax increases on the wealthy and loo it worked for them in the campaign. it worked during the argument over the fiscal cliff. i think and you see the president making the case now it is a choice between helping the middle class who the white house says will be hurt by these automatic spending cu
. that's what he was tweeting during the state of the union. he has declared nancy pelosi a domestic enemy against whom he is sworn to protect the nation. he has said that president obama is part of a socialistic elite planning to declare martial law. and he has said that the president may use the excuse of a flu pandemic to declare a martial law. he said, quote, we've seen that historically. guess how this gentleman feels about health reform? >> folks, this is obama care. let me start this by telling you what i think of this bill and obama care. they only have one agenda, and that is socialism. i call it -- i call it a steamroll of socialism that is being driven by nancy pelosi, harry reid, and fueled by barack obama. >> so very strong feelings about obama care. i should also tell you, though, that congressman browne also has very strong feelings about fruits and vegetables. he has very, very strong feelings about fruits and vegetables. >> the cdc, they're going to be calling you and finding out how many fruits and vegetables you eat today. this is socialism of the highest order. >>
. as a biproduct of that, i would suspect that nancy pelosi is going to be speaker again pretty soon. all right? >> sounded like a raucous reaction. what was the energy like in the room? and what does it mean for the president to say he's going out there and do several fundraisers for democrats. this year. >> well, we were very excited to hear that the president is going to be with us as we head toward the 2014 elections. but we were just depending on the energy in the room. we also have a plan that was very detailed and presented to us on how we're going to get from here to there. to put the gavel in nancy pelosi's plan, clearly the president will have a busy schedule. >> thank you both for your time tonight. >> thank you. coming up, the question everyone is talking about. it's tough, it's rude, but it's real. is chris christie too overweight to be president? and is that the sound of a knockout punch? karl rove is down and out. the tea party monster can't be controlled. plus, to kill or not to kill. the hot debate over drones and presidential power is a tough one. my commentary ahead. >>> big
votes and a minority of republicans. >> and basically hand power to nancy pelosi. >> again. that has been the precedent. >> governor, a lot of talk -- there's been a lot of talk about defense cuts, which certainly are half of the sequester. there are other programs being cut. 9.4% to unemployment benefits, 600,000 children and women lose food aid, 10,000 teachers fired. they're trying to emerge from the rock of being unsympathetic to the working poor, the middle class. you have these sequester cuts take place that undermines any argument. >> i depart from democratic orthodoxy in this one. i so bad want to cut all the fat out of the pentagon that i'm willing to do this. it's terrible. i hope we can restore some of the things. 2% medicaid cuts don't have any effect on patient care whatsoever. it is true that there are some bad cuts in there from a democratic point of view. we are never again going to get a chance to cut the pentagon back from where it's been. pentagon hasn't had any significant cuts for 30 years. a lot of money that's going to be cut is money that was not asked for but
with you on this one. i am sizing up from speaker boehner and nancy pelosi. the language and the tone and how do you assess where things were 23 days out? >> right. you would be hard pressed to find a member who wants the sequester to go through. in the defense industry with representative rooney and that's a big industry in florida. no one wants this to happen, but when you look at the alternatives, house republicans are not very optimistic that they can feel comfortable voting for given the president only wants to have a package that includes spending increases or tax hikes. >> let me play what was said regarding the tax revenue idea. let's take a listen, please. >> his first answer to everything is new taxes. when you think about it, what happened in january? he got $600 billion in new revenue with the spending cuts and now again he wants to raise taxes. it's time for us to cut spending. >> combine that with what boehner said. the tax question has been resolved or answered. how do you reply to the republican who is said the democrats are trying to get more of your money to solve a
to act. >> we've seen the republicans playing game. >> i love nancy pelosi. >> playing games with the budget. >> they recognize that the sequester is a bad idea. >> i don't like the sequester. >> something so terrible. >> i am prepared to do a big deal. >> you need to have a balanced approach. >> that ends this governance by crisis. >> to solve it, you need to have a balanced approach. >> game of drones. >> john brennan's confirmation hearing. >> whether he should be the next cia director. >> he's determined, he's strong. >> john brennan is going to face questions. >> a lot of questions. >> about the legal justification for using drone strikes. >> drones set to take center stage. >> to kill american citizens. >> these targets are ethical and justified. >> these are not the drones you're looking for. >> republicans are at war with karl rove. bush's brain, as rove used to be known, when rove was thought to still have a brain, is on a mission to crush backcrap crazy republicans so the party will actually nominate more reasonable candidates who have a chance of winning general el
? this is government intervention by the republicans before they handed the gavel to nancy pelosi. and this is what they stuck the workers with. they want to destroy the post office because they want to privatize everything. today i guess you can say is chapter one, where is the banner, mission accomplished for the republican destruction of the middle class in this country. now, congressman darrell issa, who he just loves the news. he called it common sense-sense reform. of course it's common sense to darrell issa. he has already proposed a bill to put more government regulations on the post office. issa wants to restructure the postal service by capping the growth of the workforce and cutting benefits and services. cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut your way into a profit. issa has no problem leading the charge here, folks, because he's got a lot of money from one of the postal service's main competitors, you got it, ups. fedex has got a hand in this too, by the way. they're also a big contributor to the cause. they gave almost twice as much to republicans than democrats last year in the congress.
rough on nancy pelosi please. give people hope. i hope that means you're going to crucify -- >> oh really? would you stop it? >> throw a bucket of water on her and see what happens. throw a bucket of water on her. i'll bet she melts. >> stephanie: wicked witch humor. okay. >> you know, i know he makes the rounds to drum up business for the sunday show which is dead last and always has been. but you know, he appears on a show like thafnlt he appears oh, stop it. why are you making those cracks? they do it all the time. chris wallace is supposed to be the last sort of serious journalist in the fox news umbrella. it is just embarrassing. >> stephanie: all right. well said. eric boehlert for media matters. see you next week, honey. >> all right bye. [ applause ] >> we will be on next week. next monday. i know is a holiday. we'll be giving you a fresh live show. >> stephanie: enjoy. >> sara in colorado. >> good morning, folks. how are you doing? >> caller: your nails are pretty too if i can put my 2 cents in. >> i have a couple of things. i don't want to take up your time. i want to get
in the second inaugural and nancy pelosi who called unemployment a jobs bill. positive liberty is when the government gives you stuff that lets you be all you can be. that's what obama talked about in the second inaugural. he said all these programs liberate people to be entrepreneurial. my suspicions if you give them free this, free that. it doesn't make them entrepreneurs but it makes them dependent on the government. martha: thank you, jonah. always good to see you. he's a poet and doesn't know it. gregg: another day of dramatic testimony expected in the ex-girlfriend murder trial. she changed her story over and over again about her former boyfriend's death and her latest version of events. save her from the death penalty. >> we talked about it and basically our relationship was over and it was kind of sad. eat good fats. avoid bad. don't go over 2000... 1200 calories a day. carbs are bad. carbs are good. the story keeps changing. so i'm not listening... to anyone but myself. i know better nutrition when i see it: great grains. great grains cereal starts whole and stays whole. see t
there will be frustrations, but he said if you keep focused i expect nancy pelosi will be speaker again pretty soon. echoing what you just said the american people are largely with us on all of these issues, and we have got to go for it. >> the republican congress right now is less popular than head lice. it's true. there was a poll head lice colonoscopies, root canals -- still more popular than -- oh gosh what is that -- std -- >> stephanie: chlamydia? >> no. >> stephanie: not the one okay. >> anyway they are at risk and even they are saying and worried about it that if they really botch this -- all of these fiscal debates that they are going to be in trouble in 2014. well, they are doing a really good job at botching these by targeting absolutely the wrong people in our world, and everybody i think is catching on, and so we'll see, although eric canter -- i don't know if you saw. he gave a speech that sounded really similar to the president's inaugural address. hit all of the points. they are trying to remake themselves. so we'll see. >> stephanie: yeah, i hear the presiden
